Malaya Movement USA commemorates the 36th Anniversary of People Power Uprising

The Malaya Movement USA joins the Filipino people in celebrating the 36th anniversary of the EDSA People Power uprising. The Malaya Movement USA looks at this historic event as a source of inspiration as we continue to fight to ensure the end of the tyrannical Duterte regime.

The EDSA People Power uprising 36 years ago has shown us the firm resolve of the Filipino people to oust fascist dictator Ferdinand Marcos from Malacañang after years of repressive and violent rule as well as the struggle to restore democracy.

This year’s celebration reminds us of our duty to learn the lessons, both the successes and failures of the uprising. This becomes even more urgent now as we confront the Marcoses’ attempts to return to power and the systemic issues that create tyrants like Duterte.

The EDSA uprising has shown that the people united and organized can topple dictators. On the other hand, the EDSA uprising has also taught us that the struggle to correct the systemic injustices must persevere beyond overthrowing dictators. We must act on our historic duty to ensure the end of the Duterte regime, prevent the return of the Marcoses, and pursue the cause of democracy and human rights.

We have such an opportunity in the upcoming general elections in the Philippines. Currently, the tandem of Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte represents the continuation tyrannical rule in the Philippines.

The Marcos-Duterte tandem would prove detrimental to the Philippines as a whole, and a win for the fascist dynastic families on the 50 year anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law under Marcos would be a slap in the face to the Filipino people. No matter who takes office this upcoming election, those in positions of power must always reflect the needs of the people. That no matter the face of tyranny, we must rise up against all oppressors in defense of human rights!

Malaya Movement USA calls on the Filipino people, in the Philippines and abroad, to continue to resist and rise up against the return of the Marcoses and Dutertes to Malacañang. It is imperative that the Filipino people continue to pressure the Philippine government for clean and honest elections and ensure that their votes are counted during this most critical election year. We must remain united in our fight against dictatorship and remain steadfast in our commitment to human rights, democracy, and sovereignty to the Philippines.
