The Malaya Movement USA calls on Filipinos and allies to join People’s State of the Nation Address activities (PSONA) around the country to present the real conditions of the Filipino people. In a time of massive disinformation and deception propagated by the Philippine government, now under Ferdinand Marcos Jr., telling the truth and countering the lies of the regime is a necessary act of resistance.
On the occasion of Marcos Jr’s first state of the nation address, let us take this as an opportunity to amplify the people’s demands for genuine change: immediate and comprehensive plan to address the worsening economic crisis, justice and accountability for the victims of the Duterte regime’s atrocities and an immediate end to the attacks on human rights, press freedom and civil liberties.
We condemn the Marcos-Duterte regime for its attempts to suppress and prevent the holding of the PSONA rally led by our allies in Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) and others in the Philippines. The Marcos-Duterte regime, through its minions in the Philippine National Police (PNP), has declared a “no-rally” zone as well as preventing anyone from holding any protest marches along Commonwealth Avenue where the PSONA is traditionally held. On top of this, the regime is mobilizing more than 20,000 troops to secure what seems to be a very insecure regime. We echo the position of people’s organizations in the Philippines that PSONA rally is well within the rights of the people, with or without a permit.
This is a clear sign of what to expect under the new regime: further curtailment of human rights and civil liberties amidst a worsening economic crisis. In light of this, this is all the more reason for all democratic forces and freedom loving citizens and allies to join us in the streets for the PSONA and beyond - in the movement to advance human rights, genuine democracy and sovereignty in the Philippines.
