Shut down “Maid in Malacañang”! No to historical revisionism!

Malaya Movement USA statement on “Maid in Malacañang” U.S. film screenings

Malaya Movement USA calls on its members, allies, and other concerned citizens to boycott and denounce the U.S. screenings of "Maid In Malacañang". The movie was produced by Sen. Imee Marcos and directed by director Darryl Yap.

The film aims to show the last 72 hours before the Marcos family before the Filipino people stormed the Malacañang presidential palace during the People Power Uprising of 1986. Imee Marcos claims they’re not revising history.

The film’s release has been met with controversies and criticisms. Free tickets were being sent to various institutions and organizations to fill the seats on opening day in order to bulk up movie sales. It distorts Cory Aquino taking refuge with the Carmelite nuns. It presents the storming of Malacañang as akin to an angry mob. Imee Marcos claims they’re simply telling this story from their perspective. More like tsismis or rumor mongering.

The last days of the Marcoses in Malacañang are well documented historical events which demonstrate the will of the people who were united in rising up against the corruption of the Marcos family and the violence implemented by Ferdinand Marcos. The retelling in this film is an affront and insult to the victims of Martial Law and all those who were a part of the anti-dictatorship resistance that led to the People Power Uprising.

We've seen the devastating impacts of the willful spread of disinformation and historical revisionism and how it has paved the way for the Marcoses to return to power. This film is no different and only adds to the growing body of falsified works being peddled as real history by the Marcos family and loyalists. The real and critical view of Philippine history of the Filipino people’s struggle for justice and democracy should be further amplified and be made louder than and spread farther than disinformation and lies.

Today and onwards, we call on our members, supporters and all those who stand for truth to boycott all screenings of Maid in Malacañang. Furthermore, we encourage everyone to hold actions and counter educational activities. Expose the sinister deception being peddled by Marcos Jr and his loyalists! Join Malaya Movement USA and BAYAN USA as we commemorate ML@50 this September!
