Malaya Movement USA statement on the 51st anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law

As Malaya Movement USA concludes its 2nd National Assembly in New York City, we must do our duty as the overseas anti-dictatorship formation of Filipinos in commemorating the anniversary of Martial Law. We pay tribute to the martyrs and survivors of Marcos Sr.’s dictatorship as we raise the alarm regarding Marcos Jr.’s recycling of the dictator’s fascist tactics.

We solemnly pay respect to our predecessors, those who either died or survived the abductions, torture, enforced disappearances, and murder by the militarized Marcos Sr. government. They faced death for protesting to stop the worsening poverty, falling employment, ballooning inflation, and crushing debt brought about by Marcos Sr.’s neoliberal policies and what would become the greatest robbery by a government in world history. Because of them, Filipino history is undeniably defined by breathtaking courage.

Today, the Marcoses are back along with Marcos Sr.’s signature brand of governance. The Philippines is under unofficial Martial Law. The state bureaucracy has been militarized to sniff out and flush out dissent. The NTF-ELCAC red-tags, abducts, threatens, and forces activists to parrot scripted lies that paint the state blameless and dissent akin to terrorism. Almost weekly, we hear of a killing, disappearance, or torture of environmental activists, journalists, or peace talks consultants. The Department of Education is at the heart of historical revisionism, starting with our textbooks.

Yet, the Filipino people fight. Despite the fear and deception the Marcos-Duterte government uses to chill or neutralize the movement for genuine democracy, all over the country workers, Indigenous peoples, lawyers, human rights activists, journalists, and more fight everyday to expose the truth and protect the people. Just as Marcos Jr. echoes his father, the anti-fascist movement today echoes those who fought the dictatorship then.

It is under this legacy that Malaya Movement USA is urgently growing and strengthening the overseas anti-fascist movement against Marcos-Duterte. Fight for truth and overcome the fascist state until we achieve genuine democracy in the Philippines!
