Malaya Movement USA amplifies the urgent call to surface disappeared indigenous Lumad leaders Michelle Campos and Genasque Enriquez whose whereabouts are currently unknown after being arrested by state forces earlier this week.
Michelle and Genasque are both members of the Manobo tribe in Lianga, Surigao del Sur. Their tireless work to defend their ancestral domain from encroachment and destruction by mining corporations have made them targets by the state, along with other Lumad leaders like Michelle’s father, Dionel Campos. Dionel was one of three victims of the Lianga Massacre of 2015 by the 75th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army.
Since Marcos Jr. took office in 2022, there has been an increase in the disappearances of activists including the case of Jonila Castro and Jhed Tamano. Their willingness to speak out during a press conference exposed the psychologically taxing and dangerous conditions they face in detention by state forces. We condemn this deeply concerning fascist counterinsurgency tactic by the Marcos regime and demand an immediate end to its use against activists and human rights defenders.
Malaya Movement USA calls on the Marcos Regime and his military forces to surface Lumad leaders Michelle Campos and Genasque Enriquez immediately! Their rights and personal integrity must be ensured under the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) and Republic Act No. 9851 or the domestic law implementing the IHL.
