Malaya Movement USA condemns charter change, latest fake news campaign, and the mass manipulation of the Filipino people

We condemn unscrupulous politicians’ fresh attempts to open up the Philippine constitution through mass deception and capitalizing on the chronic suffering of the Filipino people, otherwise constituents they claim to serve.

This latest episode of charter change is predictably vile in new ways. We urgently raise alarm at reports that millions, potentially public funds, are being dispensed to buy impoverished constituents’ signatures for a “People’s Initiative” signature campaign to open up charter change proceedings via popular demand. These failures for elected leaders find no way of alleviating generations of poverty yet find many ways to exploit our desperation. Our democracy remains weak and in need of saving.

It is a myth put forth by politicians like those in the Ako Bicol party-list accused of paying for signatures and former President Rodrigo Duterte that opening up the constitution will benefit the working poor of the Philippines by incentivizing foreign investors. The truth is that politicians fatten their pockets one way or another by surrendering the Philippines to foreign corporations bit by bit, while keeping Filipino workers in desperate conditions and chronically poor.

It should not be lost on anyone that politicians, whether they’re upfront about it or not, seek to manipulate constitutionally established term limits. Weaker checks on term limits mean the unending stranglehold of corrupt dynasties squeezing the Filipino people of every centavo we’re worth. They can claim charter change is “for the poor” all they want, but we see through these lies.

Malaya Movement USA says no to charter change! Uphold the legacy of EDSA People Power and fight for genuine development and change!
